The night was a bit slow, I'm starting to remember why I posted so much in 2013. The marathon coincided with a TON of big name releases, such as Queensryche, Attila, Amon Amarth and Orphaned Land. This year isn't quite the same. Jungle Rot and August Burns Red really work the big piece of the new release pantry. Not exactly the same.

That being said, thus far I am satisfied with the fun and the like that has happened so far.

STREAM! 1:00PM. Thats about an hour from this being posted.

Anyway, there's a few videos that need to be posted. So lets do that quickly.

ALKALOID - The Malkuth Grimoire Album ReviewAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-36653580473983995602015-07-01T01:20:00.001-07:002015-07-01T01:20:17.738-07:00Whoa, we're halfway there........whoa-oh, living on a prayer!

Yeah we don't really talk about Bon Jovi on this channel. But I can remember being in a car with friends who all decided to belt this song, which was playing on the radio. I remember the radio feed cutting out for a short spell for the whoa-oh and we were left to pick up the slack. It was a magica moment.

Yep, we are halfway home. There was just a 10 Awesome Songs episode posted about an hour ago. Thus begins a bit of a cooldown, there are videos that will be coming within the next hour or so. One I think will be ready by 6AM, another will come a bit after that. The pace will quicken toward the finish once we hit 9 or 10AM. For now, to ensure we make it, I gotta focus more on recording and recharging.

In reality, in conjunction with my previous commitments before this marathon began, I'm already pushing 24 hours without sleeping. Less than 4 hours until we hit that mark. By the time this is done, I'll be more than halfway to 36 hours. I've done crazier things, longer spells, etc, but that was when I was a bit younger. I'll sleep well tonight.

Still with me, Nation????

11 hours 50 minutes in.
12 hours 10 minutes to go.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-64576455601060517592015-06-30T22:12:00.000-07:002015-06-30T22:12:41.973-07:00Iron Maiden and Jungle Rot Sounds like night and day, right? Well the newest two videos of the marathon include these bands. Firstly, a unique experiment for Iron Maiden, choosing my favorite song on EACH album by the long-running metal legends.

I'll do a list of my top 15 (or more) Iron Maiden songs in the future with more editing involved. Thanks to the CKN Stream crowd for making this video a reality. What started as a suggestion turned into this.

Secondly, we get to JUNGLE ROT, who just released their newest album ORDER SHALL PREVAIL.

Not a bad effort, but pretty par for the death metal course.

1:10AM EST. We are nearing the 9 Hour mark, so we are more than 1/3rd of the way home.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-16494885728884125162015-06-30T19:50:00.001-07:002015-06-30T19:50:11.176-07:006 Hour update. With 6 hours in the books, its been pretty active over here. While only posting 5 videos thus far (including the Lamb of God track review) the stream has taken an hours worth of time and is honestly a great time for the fans to talk with me a little bit, and actually get a piece of the 24 hours action. it'll certainly be a bit more interesting tomorrow when the stream restarts when i am much closer to total sleep deprivation.

As of now, including the things I had to do prior to the start of 24HoursofCKN, I've only been up 14 hours. Not bad at all. I'm still fresh and sharp. No worries yet. Talk to me at this point in time tomorrow morning when I'll have eclipsed 24 hours and the story will be a bit different.

I think 3 more videos will be going up in the coming few hours. Then, during the dead space of morning, I'll be doing more recording than posting, that way many videos can flow starting early tomorrow morning, running up til the finish time of 4:30PM. This is a bit different than the marathon done in 2013, which began at 2PM. That subtle shift in time really causes a shift in how the videos are uploaded and handled. More will come on the back end of 24 hours than the front end, which should be interesting since many will be made at maximum sleep deprivation.

The countdown timer has stopped, now the count-up timer has begun!

IT HAS BEGUN.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-43415201462826485592015-06-29T12:19:00.000-07:002015-06-29T12:19:24.872-07:0024 HOURS OF CKN 2015! Some General Information: We've come upon it! Only 24 hours separate us from 24 HOURS OF COVERKILLERNATION and the 2015 edition features a couple of new things that weren't a part of the first event that happened WAY BACK in 2013. But before we get into that....a couple basics.

1. Please like/dislike and comment on the videos you watch. As a Nation, we enhance and increase our coverage with all of these "engagement points." Thank you in advance.

2. The option for FAN FUNDING exists now. This event is 24 hours strong, which is definitely a grind. If you opt to give a little during the event, I'd be absolutely stoked and thankful. The option is on the official CKN youtube channel page, or you can contact me directly via facebook.

3. Sharing is key. I'm relying on you, Nation. During the event I'll be listening, creating and editing, so I will be unable to do the level of promotion that I usually do. Blow people's feeds up, post to websites that allow it. Lets break twitter and use #24hoursofCKN for EVERYTHING.

OK, NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Album Reviews:

We have 2 confirmed album reviews at this moment....

AUGUST BURNS RED - "Found in Far Away Places"

JUNGLE ROT - "Order Shall Prevail"

More will come, and not all will be NEW albums. Suggestions will be taken, but not all can be fulfilled. Remember, I need to have the album available to me.

Rants/Topics/CKN Reacts

Nothing is yet confirmed for this section, but they are not out of the question. In 2013 a simple video about the Black Veil Brides and Blood on the Dance Floor turned into a 50,000 view empire. As the day goes on, whatever I read or think will be documented in a video if the topic is cohesive enough. BE PREPARED. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.

CKN's Favorite Albums/10 Awesome Songs

CONFIRMED! There will be a new episode of EACH series during the marathon!

CKN LIVE

CONFIRMED! Two new episodes of the BRAND NEW Streaming series CKN LIVE will occur. One on each day. Times will be updated via the facebook page!

HOW DO I FOLLOW THE ACTION??????

If you have this blog saved as a bookmark, check it often during the event. As videos go live, I'll be putting them both on facebook and on here. Why should you have both bookmarked?

Because Facebook sucks. It doesn't like to deliver the work to all of you in a good timeframe. So to not miss anything, you're gonna want to be HERE.

Check the CKN channel page or RECENT VIDEOS tab OFTEN during the 24 hour event. That updates nearly instantly, and avoids the possibility that the server gets overwhelmed and refuses to send all of you the notification.

So one final question remains.....

Are you ready???????

Let's talk about videos posted from the past week on the CKN channel, since youtube and facebook hates to distribute those to all of you! If you're reading this, save this blog to your favorites, as I'll be trying to do a lot more with it in the coming months.

5/27: Asking Alexandria - "I Won't Give In" Track Review

The band behind FROM DEATH TO DESTINY has a new singer and a new song to check out. Overall..its rather average, but no doubt will sound good at live shows. Its got that tone.

5/27: CKN's TOP 30 Favorite Bands of ALL-TIME

This has been requested for a long time. This is a longer video, but covers 30 of CKN's favorite bands of ALL-TIME, taking about a minute to talk about each. A comment has the entire list posted, but do take the time and learn why each band is among CKN's favorites!

5/29: 10 Awesome Songs You May Not Know: Episode #7 - MORE METAL

Songs 61-70 of this ongoing series cover a wide array of heavy metal music, going from a fringe band that exhibits metal potential to some pulverizing melo-death and melo-black metal. This series just continues to dive deeper and deeper headfirst into music and comes up with more and more gems oft obscured by the mainstream.

5/30: Helloween - "My God-Given Right" Album Review

Helloween deliver a new album on the year of their 30th anniversary. The disc has a more positive, quirky vibe than the darker STRAIGHT OUT OF HELL that preceded it, but still gives power metal fans a dose of their favorite godfathers.

5/30: Ghost (B.C.) - "Cirice" Track Review

Wow! Ghost (or Ghost B.C. in America) give us our first taste of upcoming album MELIORA which will be coming in August. This is easily their best song to date, and the review is an absolute must-watch.

6/1: CKN Reacts to "Modern Metal Sucks"

CKN reacts to the video "MODERN METAL SUCKS" posted by fellow reviewer CountBlagorath, and remarks on the topic as well. Considering the wealth of terrific modern metal acts out there today, these three words seem rather...impossible to say the least.

6/2: Paradise Lost - "The Plague Within" Album Review

Paradise Lost give us album #14, and score the phrase "Paradise Lost CLASSIC" with this one. Mainly because it came in at #10 on.....

6/2: TOP 10 Albums of 2015 (So Far)

Let's face it, we are going to have a TON of albums to talk about in the second half of this year. So let's discuss the first 5/12ths of 2015 and select 10 of the best albums CKN has reviewed in that timespan!
First, there have been a WEALTH of new videos lately, and second...that many of you aren't seeing them.

This is the fault of Youtube and Facebook not distributing that content as they should. Recent posts on facebook have proven that memes or previously posted news stories get more "reach", meaning they get to more of you. To the tune of 13,000 for one of those, to 1,000 for a video.

So, for those who are curious, here are the videos on the CKN channel that have been posted between May 13th and May 20th.

Yep, the boys are back, and so far, Once More Round The Sun sounds like a killer disc. Take the great elements from The Hunter and magnify them, and you're on the right track. The choruses sound much larger on OMRtS thus far. Man, even when Mastodon technically smooths out their sound they still sound tremendous. Love the old work, worship Crack the Skye for its progressive-minded attitude, and really loving the straight metal with hard rock sense the new albums have cranked out.

Honestly though, the title of this blog actually has more to do with my passing birthday rather than spoiling the review that will be coming for the new Mastodon disc. I'll tell you this, Nation, it was an eventful birthday season. For one, I may have worked on my birthday and technically not done anything special for it day of (in fact, I both posted a video and worked a long shift, so both jobs were done) but I had recently returned from Clearwater Beach, Florida, where I was attending the wedding of my godbrother and his new lovely wife. It was my first true vacation in 5 years(!!!) so it was all the gift I needed. The opportunity was there, and it was an event I couldn't miss, so I didn't.

Shit, my studio headphones bit the dust. I have a spare set of earbuds, but I LOATHE EARBUDS. Looks like I'm getting myself a late birthday gift tomorrow.

Anyway, all of the videos, sparing the vacation message video were done before leaving, so I was able to recharge a little bit while down there. Hence, I made the announcement that many of you already know, but I'll reiterate on here for those who perhaps missed the video. Well, you know the original reason this blog was created, correct?

ITS
HAPPENING
AGAIN

24 HOURS OF COVERKILLERNATION - 2014 ED.

Just like last year, we're taking an entire 24 hour period and we're going to be dedicating it to reviews, videos, commentaries, lists, etc. Anything that comes to mind, anything I listen to, its a day filled with nothing but videos for all of you, in a marathon, sleepless endeavor that's unlike anything else.

Last year featured 22 different videos in a 24 hour period, featured some reviews of albums that must be long forgotten because some have just under 300 views. Meanwhile, other videos have mammoth numbers, thanks to all of you. During the day, I posted to this blog every time a new video was featured, and blogged my general thoughts and feelings during the endeavor.

What I may not have made very clear last year was how hot it was during the entire occasion. I cannot recall if I posted about it in a video or not, but at the time, the A/C was broken in our apartment. It also happened to be the warmest week we happened to see in southwest Pennsylvania all of last year, with temperatures in the mid-90's and humidity out the asshole. No rain fell, so there was no relief from the heat. I left our patio door open with the screen closed to let in air, but it was just heated air that didn't help a bit. The night was the best part of the entire day, where temps dipped to the high 60's (Fahrenheit scale, apologies to the rest of the world. Correct me if I'm wrong, but highs were between 30-35 C with lows only dipping to 19-20? Does that sound correct?) At any rate, it was hot as a motherfucker and we did this. During the experience, I grew dizzy and definitely lost some weight in sweat alone.

No complaints, to be honest. I tell you all this just to let ya peak behind the curtain.

This year we're gonna do it again. I'm aiming for it to be the middle of the week, since most of us like to try to get some plans and general fun in during the weekend. It'll also be later in the summertime, and it will be in Studio 3.0, which is FINALLY undergoing the cosmetic changes to make it at least usable for the occasion. The reason that never happened was based on some living arrangements and other personal matters, which has disappointed me greatly, but what are you gonna do, right?

Its odd I type all this, because we're in a new apartment and experiencing, yep, you guessed it, A/C issues.

Anyway, I knew that I wanted to do this again, and I know I made the announcement while on vacation, but that's my birthday gift to all of you. Yeah, its my birthday, but I'm throwing a gift your way. I don't make any sense, I know.

GET PSYCHED.

If you'd like to revisit last year's event, go to the beginnings of this blog and follow the posts. You'll get a ticket to all the videos done, as far as I know. I invite you to do this throughout the next few weeks to prepare for the big event.
TENTATIVE DATE: JULY 2014

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-79864750201083828532014-05-26T15:16:00.001-07:002014-05-26T15:16:58.291-07:00...Like Nothing Ever HappenedWe all have a little god in us, and that god has gone crazy. Crazy on the peyote delivered across the desert to all our willing and naive minds. Crazy on the information overload that's just a click away, awaiting furious consumption. Polluting the rivers of blood that plead with systems for continued life force and compromising the neurons of our mind. Third eye, mind's eye, all slowly dissipating into a state of engulfing paranoia, a trip much less enjoyable without actual medicinal consumption.

34 minutes. My aim is to free write throughout the entirety of Bring the Sun/Toussaint L'Overture. Lets see the baked images my brain regurgitates.

An ominous cloud forms over the planet Earth, blocking the sun, the moon and the stars, delivering an ominous message from the gods of the universe. The endtimes aren't here, nay, the endtimes have just begun.

Oh, you thought they'd been developing, processing and shipping their methodical hints for decades now, did you? You thought this was just the final resting place for the gravebound planet, did you? Do you see now? Does your paralysis reveal anything new to your periphery? The haunting, shadowless blackness, once a Biblical symbol of Apocalyptic riders, harbingers of chaos, signals of destruction, instead offering no remains of long overstudied and overruined text. Instead just a signpost, with damning evidence of a long-scorched human race. A blender of cultures, burnt to a crisp by one confounding message of universal annihilation, one that doesn't subject you to your sins, lifestyles, choices...no salvation for the chosen few. Blackness. Death-compared blackness.

A hybrid of emotions. Worldwide neurosis. Everybody was wrong. Everybody wishing suddenly that this cloud would dissipate and the Earth would conclude its life cycle on a breakneck collision course with the Sun. Bring the sun, bring the sun! Bring the heat, the cooked flesh of death and ultimate ending chapter. Why such a coda? The black cloud delivers a tone that states the exit wound of this world's planetary inhabitants. Not all, mind you, just those evolved enough to evolve hate and separation into groups of those allowed to enjoy paradise and those scheduled to eternal torture. Just them. A universal cosmic phenomena perhaps only signaled by the planet herself. Gaia's defense. Gaia's last stand against a pesky mite colony that destroys her skin and ruins her oxygen. A colony that pollinates with itself recklessly, and elevates their offspring to the status of untouchable being, only to neglect and stunt their development.

The natural order looks on this colony of human mites with stunned silence. The same stunning feeling they've had for generations. The same motions have been taken, but over the course of centuries, the internal monologue has shifted to include one extra, lurid idea with unbridled fear, "these are the beings that could end our world?"

Humankind lurks in defense of their home. Turning to help one another only leads to a global contamination of excess power. The separated power trip instead leads to a toxic overhaul of powerlessness, with every leader balking at the chance of defense. Some claim divine reasons, others claim lack of resources, others bicker and threaten one another over reasons of noncompliance to standards, destruction of peace treaties, legal and national defense policy restrictions.....

Meanwhile the rest of humanity watches in horror.

The rest watch. The rest get angry, but the rest DO NOTHING.

The cloud turns from black to deep red, and phantom clouds reach down toward the drying Earth. The blackness removing its water to near catastrophic levels, the phantom clouds urinate an acidic rain that further deconstructs the man-made Earthly creations. Homes begin to corrode, cars degrade into nothingness, roads break down, people begin to get sick from interaction, death begins its stink.

Where's the light side? Where's the side of good? The heavenly forces of revelation have the game in front of them and have opted not to show up. Take a sick day. Perhaps for good reason.

This isn't the works of a Satanic force, nor of an antiforce that delivers a balance beam to the overbearing drive of the harbingers of light. Rather, this is natural order. This is a public service that the Earth is delivering herself. Gaia taking a shower, applying the proper medicine to dispose of the pests that threaten her livelihood. The acid urine is accompanied by fierce electricity. Lightning puts the threat lightly, instead seeming to be an opening, a rip in the fabrics of the atmosphere, shifting laws of physics and science while the faithful continue to stand in wait of their ultimate salvation.

Hooves are heard in the minds of those exposed to the acid. The acid alters their mind state to summon a hallucination of what they hoped would happen. They see horsemen, the angels of death and light. The mighty battle of revelation appears in front of them for the period of a few moments, then slowly starts of fade away into the reality of an Earth in chaos, without the mighty battle for the universe present. These visions sparkle and fade from time to time, leaving them frozen in place, their bodies slowly breaking down as they offer no defense. Soon, they die, with one final vision in sight. A vision of an angry Earth roaring to life, shifting plates, crumbling mountains and shaking violently. Some still offer this up to the divine, while others are illuminated into realization that no intervention occurred at all. The educated and non-religious fall to their knees in stunned disbelief, ultimately accepting defeat without much fight. The many fall, while the powerful still bicker about their fate.

Mankind then launches its final deathnail. World leaders summon their nuclear powers and bombs, launching them at random, hoping to strike whatever and whomever. Gaia is prepared, striking the bombs with the sky-opening lightning, transforming the acidic urine into radioactive waste, further melting away the beings infesting her skin. The battle causes great pain, the fumigation takes many innocent forms of collateral damage. World leaders begin to die from the radiation of their choices, while the survivors empty from their corroding buildings only to die upon reaching the decaying streets.

Nothing. One final worldwide flash.

Nobody.

A bloodied planet begins its healing process. The plates are reset, the land mass restored over the radioactive decay. Volcanoes flow nonstop magma to cover the evidence, while flooding rains rebuild the oceans and rivers.

Like nothing ever happened.

This topic is something that I feel I would have a better time putting in the written text, but may make a video to accompany it, so be on the look out just in case that happens.

Today I've been cycling through some of my music collection, adding some new finds, a lot of them non-metal or at least non-traditional and its made me think about myself some. Its made me realize just how much age does tend to shift your music taste a little bit here and there. In reality, no music fan should listen to the same crop of artists throughout the entirety of their lives. Its actually rather impossible to do so, especially in an age where so many bands have their material available for purchase, and its actually easier to share things around than ever before. That said, one would imagine that my recent crop of buys, finds or general listens would be aimed at new bands, or hell, metal bands. Quite the opposite, really.

Heavy metal will always have a place in my heart, and I listen to it more often than I do any other genre of music. I review it for a second living, I love talking about it, and consider myself somewhat of a guru. Ok, no I don't, people have said that about me. They've come to me for advice, etc. I'm definitely not the best guy for that in my own opinion, but as my harshest critic, of course I'd say that. Recently, I've turned to various other styles of music to find my muse. Pushing 30 doesn't make your hero over the hill where young bucks should be buying me Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass albums, but the past year has redefined a lot about my listening habits.

Lets examine the past week just as an example. Coldplay, The Black Keys, Widespread Panic, Allman Brothers, Winger, Stevie Wonder, Santana, Afghan Whigs, just to name a few. Something seems absent, doesn't it? Where's the metal? Well, that's my spare time. The review time has been ripe with metal. Agalloch, Down, Killer Be Killed, just to name a few. However, the eclectic nature of my likes and maybe, just maybe, my age are really catching up.

As you grow up, your horizons should branch out by leaps and bounds. Its fair to prefer a style of music over all the others. After all, maybe you're just listening to a few cuts here and there from a spattering of artists, but that's still, in a way, showing appreciation for the vastness of music. After all, what really is wrong with loving jam bands, or southern rock, or new wave? What's a crime about listening to Blondie right after listening to Cannibal Corpse? Nothing. In fact, its pretty damn funny to hear the transition. Why not go from doo-wop to technical death metal to disco to rap to the blues? Beardfish to The Game to Stevie Wonder to Miles Davis? Its like musical chairs, and its a damn fun experience.

So many sounds are out there. Its not a tragedy, its a blessing. If you're ever bored with your music collection or have no idea what to listen to, just type in a name, then look on the side, at the recommended videos. Find a name that's not recognized by you, then play it. Or hell, go for a name that is, but you've never dove headlong into their work. You know who Barry White is, but you've never listened to Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe? Tonight's the night. Didn't realize that Joe Bonamassa did a cover of Tom Waits' "New Coat of Paint?" Listen to it, its blues bliss.

I've always been an ambassador of music, a role that hasn't always been obvious thanks to my anger-laced rants...but its because I want more out of the music of today. I want the children of this generation of teenagers to be able to go back 20-30 years musically and find work just as legendary as the wealth of musical joy we have. I don't want Lil' Wayne to be defined as the artist of this generation, because then this generation is a farce, a lie, a rouse. I'd rather shout to a small audience about the insanely talented work of those not going platinum than whisper at the masses for additional profit. You start small and you foster a change of heart. Sure, you won't get everyone, and you shouldn't. Music touches us all in different ways, and it should. But how, I ask, HOW, is someone emotionally connected with, "now come on and pop that pussy for a real nigga"? HOW? And how dead inside as an artist must you be to repeat that line in multiple songs? Is it some sort of call-back joke? Almost like Wayne saying, "i can spit the same verses and these dummies still make me platinum?" Sure seems like it. I don't care for Lil Wayne that much, but I don't see him as a moron.

Remember when something was big when you were a kid, and you wanted nothing to do with it? I do. Boy bands. Fuck. One of the most annoying fads of the late 90's which, by itself, killed the momentum of alternative rock and made it where a few similar sounding bands had to be seen as the alternative to the 4 to 5 piece boy sobbing. Nu-metal. Nope, not so new anymore, and really, not that relevant anymore, too. It has its place historically, and still maintains a fanbase, but the music many of these fans have moved on to isn't nu-metal. Five Finger Donkey Punch and Avenged Sevenfold? Nope, not nu-metal. Dissimilar sounds, man.

It may not seem like they've grown up, but they have. I see them buying Vanilla Ice or MC Hammer every so often, then shock the collective local universe by grabbing a U2 record. U2, Sonic Youth, Melvins, R.E.M., indie fans, remember where you came from.

Listen to something brand new tonight, and not from your genre of choice. Take a goddamn risk. Maybe I'm in the minority in finding this to be one of the most fun ideas or ways to spend an evening. Maybe you'd rather go on a marathon of Game of Vampires or True Life of an American Idiot, and hey, I like tv, too. I have a second channel that one of these days will be covering that with some gaming. But if you claim to love music, and love "everything" then you should try something off the wall every now and again.

Off to listen to Off the Wall. Who's the artist? Come on, this is an easy one...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-70383634184332377452013-11-10T11:08:00.001-08:002013-11-10T11:08:17.513-08:00Epic Prog Leads to Epic Blog Yeah, like the title suggests, this is gonna be FUCKING EPIC! Epic in the fact that I have some announcements and stuff to discuss that's regarding the channel's upcoming future, as we get down to a little more than a MONTH away from end-of-year award season. That, of course, means that some of the most IMPORTANT CKN videos will be on their way very shortly. I hope that every single one of you view them and comment on them. Well, if you can, that is....let's start there, shall we?

What the Google is Wrong with my Youtube?
Shit, even I don't know. The only issue I've had has been with trying to respond to comments. I can still comment fine, but I'm guessing you can only reply to comments if folks have their accounts linked? I dunno, but I will say this....if that's the case, then just link them. Seriously, if that's all it takes, then cool. I made a brief video about it, but I've tabled it, because everyone and their asshole uncle has made a video or something about this, so with this poor paragraph, the subject is closed.

This IS kind of a business decision...
Oh, no, the subject isn't closed. I had someone recently offer me the suggestion that if I made a video expressing boycott, something would happen. While I truly appreciate the thought that my opinion would cause a bit of a blackout that may cause a reversal of fortune, I can say with 100% accuracy that: A) it won't, and B) I can't.

The reason is pretty simple. Most know, but others may not, so I reiterate for those who may not. This is actually a hobby that's turned into a bit of a business. Not business in the sense that I am marketing and selling goods, no. A business where, through a partnership (not with Google,) I am earning some money by doing this. Its actually become a second job, of sorts, where doing as best as I can has become of importance as opposed to just a friendly surprise. You get a taste of success and...

But yeah, a blackout actually causes a bit of strain for me. Especially the suggestion of one day a week. The funds earned are being used to ease the total cost of rent for myself and my girlfriend, that way we can exist and live without being bottom-feeders suckling on the system's teet. Sounds a bit hippie, but I'm proud to have never done that, especially in my area, which boasts one of the highest welfare percentages not only in the state, but also in the country.

So once again, while the sentiment and thought that my voice would cause that much noise throughout the youtube community, its doubtful that it would, and it would put me in a position that I'd rather avoid. But I will say, that its pretty cool that some of you have such faith in my voice that it, in your mind, would move millions. We can beat this in other ways, though. Basically, by becoming a true force on youtube and in our daily lives.

The Daily Challenge of Life
A Spelunky reference? Ahhh, my latest addiction. Love that game. I have Steam, gamers. The name is the same as the name of the channel, if you wish to add. I don't game much, as it would cut into my duties, but friends are friends, right?

Louvember Denied
Out of respect of Lou, I'm leaving my tribute as the only thing I'll do in regard to that. No discography. I have far too little of his work, and while the availability of the others is pretty wide, I don't think I'd give it the same justice as a reviewer like Threecreation could. Zero disrespect for Lou. I have been enjoying some of his work throughout the month, and, if in the future I happen to assemble a larger catalog, I may have something neat in mind.

On the Subject of Discographies
While the slow months progress, I will be tackling a few discographies that are pretty long overdue. If you're on the facebook group, you know I just presented you with 4 bands and asked for a choice. The winner of that will be the first to get a discography review. I'm not spoiling it, because I know there will be some people going to post now that they've seen this, so I'm gonna give it a few more days. Yes, I know that they are all thrash bands, and some of you are probably getting tired of thrash-related work, but my main thought has been that half of the Big 4 have gotten discographies, so lets give the other 2 a shot at getting one, and also adding 2 others to see who emerges victorious. This should start within the next week or so, and I'll hopefully post links both on facebook and on here.

December to Remember
Anybody who gets that reference should get a prize, but I have literally nothing cool to offer right now. Its pretty easy, though, so if you got it, good job! December will be very memorable for a few different reasons. We're going to be continuing the "some of the best artists" series both this month and next month, and you've just been made aware of the discography potential, but we have some slight changes to the CKN best of lists that need to be addressed.

1. The Top 25 may or may not have 10 honorable mentions this year, or may just become the Top 35 list. This is being considered due to the wealth of awesome work this year has given us.
2. The Top 10 Pop/Rock/Alternative list will now become a Top 15 List.
3. The 10 Worst albums of the year will move from being free-form or a top 5 to a top 10 list.
4. As always, the State of the Music address 2014 will come a few days after New Years Day. It'll be talking about some changes coming to the channel with regard of both the rating system, as well as some new features that may be coming.

Final Thoughts
We haven't had a new Thought Buffet in a while. I consider that kind of fortunate, all things considered, but in this period of dormancy, check out the old ones and have your voice heard in the comments on some pretty broad social issues. There may be one or two in the works before the end of the year covering some pretty broad topics, so stay tuned.

Told Ya It'd Be Epic
Thanks to Prospekt's The Colourless Sunrise for providing the soundtrack to this blog. Most of you will know about the blog in one part due to checking out the album review for this very album, but for those who haven't, check this band out. Very solid up-and-coming progressive metal (hints of technical metal, a dabble here and there into what some would call djent or prog-alt) out of the UK.

Kudos, all,
Everyday our numbers grow I feel honored and humbled that I get to speak to so many of you. You're all amazing people.

October was meant to be a really powerful and positive month. As I sit here, we are midway through, and zero of the goals I had set out for this time have been accomplished, and, in fact, I've encountered huge personal roadblocks that have shook the foundation of my life outside of coverkillernation to its core, which have demanded handling. By now, I wanted to have Studio 3.0 up and running, I wanted to have the new apartment completely unpacked, and wanted to be bringing you all videos from the new place, both official and just for fun. Well, all of you deserve an explanation.

1. CKN, why are videos coming from Studio 1.0 and not Studio 3.0? Did you actually move?
I did, back on the 5th of October. The studio hasn't been set up yet. In fact, the studio has become a catch-all point for things that still need unpacking. Work schedules have been the unpacking process very slow. Physical exhaustion would be enough of a reason, but there's a lot more to it than that.

2. CKN, you're not posting as much, both on youtube and on facebook, why?
This is where things get complicated. A week ago, the answer would be simple, but since then, its become really convoluted and personal. The short answer is that we transferred the internet service, with a Tuesday, October 9th start date in mind. When the day came, the internet never connected. There are huge issues with the provider in the building we moved to, and every other tenant I've spoken to has stated that they have had to move to cable internet, as opposed to Verizon. The issue is twofold: The building was formerly a school building, but was converted into apartments back in the 1980s. The wiring, however, is still badly outdated. Potential reason #1 for the internet not working is this old wiring. High-speed internet demands updated modem wiring, which is present in a lot of homes because people choose to update when they desire to, but a building upgrade is still in the works. The apartment has underwent changes in property ownership, and are tackling the cosmetic changes first. Wiring isn't on that list, though it's badly needed. Potential reason #2 is a faulty box, but this is hard to support, because the box worked flawlessly in Studio 2.0, only about two streets away, and survived the move without a scratch on it. At this point, I'm just thankful to have a place to record and communicate minorly.

3. OK, CKN, that explains youtube, but facebook?
This is where things get personal. I've recently been dragged into the personal business of a former friend of mine and her (potential ex) boyfriend. Their personal business has been spilled outside of the privacy of their own lives and into the public lives of facebook and other social media outlets. Its caused a tremendous amount of personal turmoil, and, at least on a personal level, has left me in a terrible place of mind. In short, I was stabbed in the back by somebody whom I thought I could call a best friend, and the residual effects attempted to ruin the life I have with my relationship, and tarnish many friendships that I previously had, as well as attempt to severely damage my reputation. I would take to the air and record a video laced with anger, disgust, rage, and destructive feeling, but that's not why Coverkillernation exists, at least not in the personal forum.

As many of you know, I'm someone who possesses thick skin, but even that thickness has been pierced in this situation. As many of you also know, this hasn't exactly been the greatest of years for me outside of the channel. Besides my relationship and the channel, the man that CKN is outside of youtube has taken a number of punches to the gut, which have tested the merits of my recovery ever since my life nearly ended in 2008 by my own accidental hand. This year has tested that meddle, and its not been an easy journey.

Patience is a virtue, Nation. One that I sadly sometimes lack when I am faced with turmoil. I ask for patience when mine is being tested, which sounds totally unfair, but its all I can do. Issues have to be dealt with one at a time, and in such cases, in private, as they should be. We WILL have a great month, Nation. Maybe it'll take longer to see a video from studio 3.0 then imagined, but that doesn't mean the videos end. I gotta talk to you all about these albums, and I will.

Forever grateful isn't strong enough for my true feeling toward you all. Thanks, as always, for being members of the Nation, and for being the best fanbase on the planet, no, in the universe. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-85317906816958859292013-07-21T12:33:00.001-07:002013-07-21T12:33:57.065-07:00Influential Albums in Music Howdy, Nation.

I know I still have some projects left open, like the Dream Theater discography, but there's something that I semi-announced in the last CKN video that will be happening within the next few months that I wanted to get you all psyched about, and I want to explain that a little more here, since doing so on a facebook post would be very, very TLDR (too long, didn't read). The project:

INFLUENTIAL ALBUMS OF MUSIC

There are literally tons of albums that have made a HUGE impact to the music that we listen to and love today, and that's just within metal. Add in ALL MUSIC in general, and the number increases astronomically. Imagine, for example, where pop music would be without Thriller or Purple Rain. Imagine where pop will be in a few years after the full influence of Adele's 21 takes hold on the popular music production and writing subcultures. Imagine rock music without The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, The Ramones, Sonic Youth, U2, just to name a few. Hell, imagine METAL without some of these artists. Imagine blues without Miles Davis, rap without Sugar Hill Gang, N.W.A., Public Enemy, LL Cool J, the Jungle Brothers, Run D.M.C., 2Pac, Biggie, Easy-E, etc. Imagine the modern indie scene without the first waves of folk and experimental rock. Imagine Dream Theater without Kansas, Genesis, Yes, etc. There wouldn't BE a Dream Theater, much like without prog rock oddities from the 70's, Steven Wilson and Opeth both may have opted to become drug dealers, dentists, or attorneys.

That's what I'm talking about. Music that did more than touch a generation, it influenced and shaped the next.

Not all of such albums are obvious choices. For example, not a lot of people may claim that Funkadelic's "Maggot Brain" influenced metal, but I think it did. Listen to the guitar work in the title track, or on Super Stupid, and you'll see that future metal shredders had a hero to look up to, Eddie Hazel. Funk and soul influenced the likes of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and were sampled to death by hip-hop superstars. Supertramp were sampled by German happy-hardcore artist Scooter (The Logical Song) and paved the way for forward-thinking prog-rock today. Beardfish took inspiration from Emerson, Lake and Palmer, as did GHOST, on their new record.

Hell, Portugal, The Man, has been compared to the Beatles, with the way they can stylistically shift seemingly by album.

Imagine all the artists that exist because of Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin IV, Tommy, Close to the Edge, Paranoid, and others.

Imagine what the next wave of bands could hold. What the next wave of pop or rap artists can use to craft even better music. Ignore the Lady Gaga's and Katy Perry's. Screw the Taylor Swifts and Lil Waynes. They may influence some, but they'll be basically Swift Lite, or Lite Wayne, not crafters of the next round of breathtaking classics.

Kendrick Lamar sampled Beach House. The possibilities are endless.

We complain a lot about how music today is suffering from a lacking of creativity and originality. We're wrong. There's a lot out there, but its not what we hear every single day. We have to dig and search, and get the ultimate reward of discovery. But all of these artists have been influenced by that which they've heard, much like if you opt to pick up and instrument, you'll be influenced by your favorites.

So in the coming months, we're going to talk about a lot of classic and influential albums, and not all of them are going to be metal-based. I know it sort of furthers my drift away from being a metal-exclusive channel, but i'm not a metal-exclusive listener. I love music, period. I hope to do a few things with this project:

List some essential influential albums in videos, quickly. Whether it be in top 10 lists, or lists with no order.

Focus on some albums specifically, hopefully with some guests via Skype.

Enjoy the absolute hell out of listening to just a ton of interesting stuff, and give you recommendations or suggestions so you can do the same.

The nice part about a lot of classics is that they are inexpensive. Hopefully this series does more than just enhance your music palette, but also helps you add some new music to your collection. I'm looking forward to this. I hope you are as well.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-81640063160371668162013-07-15T22:34:00.001-07:002013-07-15T22:34:05.269-07:00Donations/Ways to Help/Etc. Hi folks, your friendly, neighborhood CKN here to talk about something pretty important. Please, step into my study. Would you like a drink?

So, I firstly want to extend a ton of appreciation to those of you who read that last update, and provided encouragement, kindness, and support. I should've never doubted you, Nation. You are strong, resilient and proud. However, one of you brought up something that I've...never really talked about before. Somebody mentioned if there were ways to help out with donations or anything of the like. Well, I am here to address this topic. Yeah, times suck, but I haven't been the type to do fundraising or donations, as it tends to make me sound like a money-grubbing douche. Yes, I know, with all the various hurdles life has handed me, I wouldn't seem like SUCH a douche, but its just not me. I do, however, see the other side of the road. I see that people do appreciate the efforts of this channel, and sometimes want to go out of their way to show their support. Fan art and the like is always appreciated, but if you want to go the monetary route, here's a few ways you can help me:

1. Watch Every Video: most of you already do this, anyway.
2(a). Click on the Ads: If you really want to help me out, do this. Its one part of a huge formula that determines what I make per day. I know, nobody likes the ads, I don't either, but if I like a youtubers work, I am not afraid to click that ad and give them a little extra cash for being awesome.
2(b). Share the videos to everyone, every group, etc.: Sharing increases views, clicks, you get the point. Even if your share only results in one or two more views, every little bit counts. Share the shit out of this stuff, you do not need my permission.
3. Demand my company to promote me to President of FYE
4. Donations via Paypal: Ok, #3 was an obvious joke. This one practically is, too. BUT, if you're insistent, I will accept donations to my paypal account. If you want to go this route, contact me via PM on my PERSONAL facebook page, or email me at coverkillernation@gmail.com I will only then disclose any data. Again, I don't pander, hence why I am leaving this option completely and totally in your courts. I am not asking, but I will also not be disrespectful and refuse a gift from someone else. I'm not THAT big of a douche....to my knowledge.

There you have it. I am not the type to go the donations route, as its never been my style, but I do have to shift my own thought process and realize that refusal is just downright rude. It's my aim to not only be the best reviewer I can be, but also, to try to set a good example.

Or something like that. Fuck, I dunno. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04005376590616594609noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738569561486617290.post-57553182245203384512013-07-07T13:58:00.002-07:002013-07-07T14:01:10.074-07:00Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder NP: Battlecross - Flesh and Bone
You know what that means, Nation.

Time to pop part of a pill and talk real for a while to you, Nation. Ahhhh....much better.

Over the course of the past two weeks, there's been a limited number of videos, updates, or general communication out of the Coverkiller Nation camp. This is something I am tremendously aware of on a constant basis, and a source of grief that I've not been able to follow-up the triumph of the 24 Hours of Reviewing with a steady diet of new videos. I intended to take about a week off, but what happened completely turned that vacation upside-down.

Most of you are aware that on June 9th, 2013, my Uncle committed suicide in his room by cutting his throat from one side to the other. This event does still cause a bit of trauma to my soul, but I instead opted to push through and continue forward in honor of a life that was led in true torment. I am still finding out more pieces to this puzzle, and that which I'm discovering is showcasing some foul play on the part of an egomaniac doctor, the removal of his medication for his paranoid schizophrenia, previous suicide attempts that were not successful, and the general dismay of knowing that even if his medical care's decisions were wrong, his Veteran status, and treatment at a Veteran's hospital means that little if anything can be done. Troubled dreams have followed, depression has seeped in, which means that I need to return to one of my previous coping mechanics, writing, in order to silence most of the internal hatred and rage that possesses me on a daily basis. So its time for that side of me to come out of retirement, and formulate a lyrical album as I once did on a relatively constant basis. I urge musicians to view any of these, and if further development can lead to some sort of musical future to anything posted, I'd be more than willing to take it to that next step, even if my voice wasn't even a part of it. In short, I'd be willing to commission any work to bands that would want it.

Then life got turned upside down again.

I live in a small apartment with my girlfriend. Its barely big enough for the two of us, but her brother got word that his wife was kicking him out. With nowhere else to go, he's been staying with us now since two days after the 24 Hours of Reviewing stopped. Our schedules clash, with his working nights, and our working days. His off-days are consistent, ours are not. Because of that, no videos could be made during the daytime. I usually record alone, to ensure minimal distraction, so with no time in these conditions, frustration began to build. Hence, I've gone to the old studio, which I am thankful enough to still have a stake in, just to get a few videos out. But those conditions are far from ideal. Its turned into storage space, so the setting that was once vibrant with metal and music now looks like I've wandered into a storage unit, ANY STORAGE UNIT, and just accosted it for my own gain for a few hours at a time. I apologize sincerely for that. Its unprofessional, but with limited choice, I've gone with whatever I can.

Sidebar: If anyone has a fully cracked version of Sony Vegas 11, i'd be indebted to you.

This situation has also crossed generations. Their issues have in their crosshairs the futures of three children, my girlfriend's two nephews and niece. So, at times, our little tiny home that can barely hold us has held SIX people in it. Space is nonexistent, time is an illusion, production has been impossible. Its funny how the situations of other people can affect YOU and YOUR home situation, your relationship and every single aspect of your life. Without a logical way to record and listen, and essentially do what I love to do for all of you, I felt as though I was letting you all down, and hurting you after our greatest triumph, where I asked so much of you. Hardly a reward. I spiraled further into madness.

The final blow in this trilogy of wretched luck comes from my job-front. Most if not all of you know that I work at FYE, a music/movie/entertainment store, as a third-keyholding manager. Corporate in their thoughts of brilliance have chosen to suspend full-time hours to my position company-wide, which prevents them from having to claim all of us for healthcare under the new Obamacare guidelines. Alleviating the cost has larger detriments, however, considering the requirement to be eligible is a minimum of 28 hours a week. I easily pull close to 40 hours a week as it now stands, and exceed that when my fellow managers are on vacation. A 12 hour cut makes living and making bills impossible. Even with large, full-scale cuts to aspects of my life I enjoy for fun, it still doesn't cover it. EVEN WITH YOUTUBE IT DOESN'T CUT IT. So my option is simple, find a new job, or fight this, arguing my company worth, my nearly 5 years of service and flawless sales figures. I could also argue that the store itself would suffer, many customers have personally spoken to me, telling me that if I ever left, they would take their business elsewhere. One could argue that this speaks poorly on my fellow employees, but I instead take the side that without my impact, their experience at the store would've been a one-time deal, instead of it becoming a constant place of shopping for them. With the market already going to hell because of downloading, streaming, and Netflix, can these stores afford to make this cut? Will they survive? I have serious doubts. My standing on the company is already very shady, considering they ALSO, ON TOP OF THIS, owe me close to 500 dollars in health insurance premiums deducted from my paychecks FOR HEALTHCARE I SUSPENDED IN FEBRUARY. Last year I basically, with their version of "healthcare" could claim to friends I had healthcare, but it covered NOTHING. My wisdom teeth extraction was out of pocket, all medicines were out of pocket, I couldn't even visit a doctor without fear that the healthcare would be denied, which seemed to happen EVERY time. And now, after I suspended the service THEY STILL DEDUCT FROM MY WAGES, WHICH THEY ARE GOING TO BE LIMITING ANYWAY? I don't fucking think so. If this money doesn't appear back in my hands, the courts may have to become involved, because that, my friends, is grounds for embezzlement.

It'd be one thing if I were complaining about these three things that have happened over the course of 6 months, or a year. No, folks. I'm not that way. Spread out, things can be handled, managed, and dealt with. These three things have all happened within the span of THREE WEEKS of one another. Two of them within a few days. In short, I'm at the end of sanity's rope, flushing back down into the depression that mired me before I formed this channel, that this channel SAVED me from. I need music, I need this channel...

I need you, Nation. You're all important to me.

I hope you all can find it possible to forgive the lack of updates, videos, and chatter. I hope you forgive when I make plans that don't seem to happen. Its never because of laziness or general douche-baggery. That's not my style of operation WHATSOEVER. Its universally because of outside forces working against me, or in this case, the whole world seeming to collapse around me.

I act superhuman, like a Marvel hero, but I am human. I swear.

Larger than life is only my voice, my body and soul is driven by human breath.

I love you all.
Thank you for being subscribers, fans, bros, sisters, friends, family...thank you to everyone. This insane idea seemed like just a pipe dream when it was first considered, and here we are, nearly 4 hours AFTER 24 hours. Its amazing. The past 24 (well, 28 now) hours have been like a blur. Sure, there were moments where time seemed to crawl and it was a question of whether or not it could be done, but in the end, it ended up being a race against the clock, to make sure I got that final review done for you guys before the 2:30PM buzzer sounded.

No, there wasn't an actual buzzer. Would've been a nice touch.

Special thanks goes out to my family, who didn't call me insane when I told them what I was doing. My girlfriend who put up with this, but only for about...oh...8 hours of it, since she went to a show then had to work. But still, cool beans on her for being down for this. Thanks to the friends who offered support, even if it was just by looking at me like I was an idiot. Every reaction, every piece of encouragement, it all mattered and kept me going. Endurance, baby.

Of course, one final time, thank you all, for making this happen. For being behind the idea, and really pushing that little voice inside of me to actually just do this. I may have sat here and made the videos, but you guys made this crazy idea a reality.

Sincerely,
